Closed from July 2018 until the end of 2021 due to general renovation work
The Weimar City Palace was first mentioned in a document as a medieval moated castle. Over the centuries, the castle had to be rebuilt again and again due to several fires, so that artists and master builders such as Giovanni Bonalino, sculptor Tieck and even Goethe influenced the buildings of the city palace. A special highlight are the classicistic interior, the staircase and the banqueting hall, which were built at the end of the 16th century.
Today, the castle museum is located in the north, east and west wings of the palace, which shows mainly the Grand Ducal art collection with works from the Middle Ages to the modern age.
